Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.

Wednesday, July 31

UT-SW faculty to cover neuronal activity, glucose metabolism

Dr. Kevin Williams, associate professor of internal medicine in the Division of Hypothalamic Research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, will give the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Neuronal Activity in the Study of Energy Balance and Glucose Metabolism," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Medical education vice dean to host chat over coffee

Dr. Loretta Jackson-Williams, vice dean for medical education in the UMMC School of Medicine, will host a “Coffee Talk” presentation from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, in room R136 (the J. Lincoln Arceneaux Conference Room).

Surgery chief to lead town hall on liver transplant selection

​Dr. Christopher Anderson, chief of the UMMC Department of Surgery and director of University Transplant, will give the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds Conference, "Selection of Candidates for Liver Transplant - Town Hall Discussion," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre) and again from 7:30-8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, in room N318 (3A).

LSU faculty to link methionine hepatic sensing, dietary restriction

Dr. Thomas Gettys, professor of nutrient sensing and adipocyte signaling and John H. Hernandez Professor of Health Promotion in the Pennington Center of Biomedical Research Excellence, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana State University System, will give the UMMC Department of Cell and Molecular Biology presentation, "Mechanisms Linking Hepatic Methionine Sensing to the Metabolic Responses Produced by Dietary Methionine Restriction," at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, in classroom 3A.

VAMC director to discuss treating opioid use during pregnancy

Dr. David M. Walker, medical center director of the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, will give the UMMC Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Grand Rounds presentation, "Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder during Pregnancy," from noon-12:50 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

USC faculty to cover brain pericytes, blood barrier, Alzheimer's

Dr. Amy R. Nelson of the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, Los Angeles, will give the UMMC Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Seminar Series presentation, "Brain Pericytes, Blood-brain Barrier and Their Dysfunction in Alzheimer's Disease," at noon on Monday, Aug. 5, in room 6A.

Thursday, Aug. 8

WFU faculty to cover adolescent weight program effectiveness

​Dr. Justin B. Moore, associate professor of family and community medicine in the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention and the Department of Implementation Science at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, will give the Grand Rounds presentation, “Innovative Approaches to Improve the Effectiveness of Clinical Weight Programs for Adolescents with Obesity,” at noon on Thursday, Aug. 8, in room A035 in the School of Nursing building.

The presentation is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center.
